📍 7-Day Itinerary – Climbing Chimborazo with Acclimatization.
🗓️ Day 1 – Quito to Chimborazo South Face.
The Climbing Chimborazo expedition begins with an early departure from Quito along the iconic Avenue of Volcanoes for a 4-hour drive. As you leave the bustling city behind, the scenery transforms into wide highland plains. The trek starts at 3,200 meters on the southern slopes of Chimborazo, and after a gradual hike, you reach your first camp at 3,800 meters—already higher than most European peaks. Then enjoy a delicious dinner with inspiring mountain views as you settle in for the night.
🗓️ Day 2 – Eastern Traverse to Alto Urbina.
On this day, after a hearty meal to fuel our ascent, we break camp and continue ascending eastward. The terrain is a grassy páramo as you approach the Alto Urbina sector. After approximately seven hours of steady hiking, we arrive at 4,100 meters, where we’ll set up camp under the immense presence of the mountain while resting and dining in a serene high-altitude environment.
🗓️ Day 3 – Northern Side to Abraspungo.
Then, we pack up camp after breakfast and head towards the northern face of Chimborazo, while the distance is shorter – hike 5 hours – the altitude gain is noticeable. After crossing glacial streams and observing vicuñas grazing in the distance, you settle at 4,300 meters near the Abraspungo valley. This setting offers unmatched tranquility and brilliant night skies—ideal for recovery and continued adaptation.
🗓️ Day 4 – Carihuyrazo Summit Acclimatization
Following an early breakfast, the day introduces a significant acclimatization effort: the western summit of Carihuyrazo at 4,850 m over an 8-hour hike. This side adventure strengthens your physical readiness for the final push and also provides spectacular panoramic views. After descending to the camp, a well-deserved dinner and recovery rest await.
🗓️ Day 5 – Chimborazo’s Southwest Approach
As day unfolds, continue your acclimatization by traversing the southwest face of Chimborazo for 8 hours, completing the circumnavigation of the mountain. This scenic trail takes you past rugged volcanic formations until you reach 4,800 meters, the base camp for the final ascent. That night, the southwestern face of Chimborazo lights up with the last rays of sun—a memorable moment before summit night.
🗓️ Day 6 – Short Ascent to Castle Ridge
On this short day, each participant carries their technical glacier equipment up to Castle Ridge at 5,300 meters to establish a temporary camp. This high camp is your final stop before attempting the summit. Enjoy a light dinner and rest as you prepare for the final ascent.
🗓️ Day 7 – Climbing Chimborazo Summit and Return
Finally, Climbing Chimborazo begins just before midnight. The summit push starts around 11:00 p.m., ascending slowly and steadily with headlamps lighting the way. If conditions allow, you’ll reach the 6,270-meter summit in 6 to 7 hours by sunrise, rewarded with a panoramic view stretching from north to south of the Ecuadorian Andes and from the eastern Amazon basin to the western Pacific coast – perfect for capturing unforgettable photos! . After a moment of reflection at the top of Ecuador’s highest peak, the farthest point from the Earth’s center, you’ll descend carefully to base camp, pack your gear, and return to Quito or better Baños, where you can unwind in its famous hot springs and celebrate this extraordinary achievement.
